BIOGRAPHY

Prof. Balthazar Michael Msanya is a soil scientist and pedologist with vast experience in research and training in the areas of soil morphology, soil genesis, soil classification, soil survey and land evaluation. He is also involved in consultancy and outreach activities on the themes mentioned above. Prof. Msanya’s specialization is pedology for soil/land resources’ characterization and assessment. He has over 35 years of experience in university teaching, research, consultancy and outreach in his area of specialization. Prof. Msanya has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, book chapters and extension manuals. He has also carried out various consultancies in the areas of pedological characterization for assessment of potentials for agricultural development. He is a member of the Soil Science Society of East Africa, and was for quite a long time a member of the International Soil Science Society (ISSS).

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Prof. Msanya’s research interests include soil and related land resources mapping and characterization, soil morphology, soil genesis & classification; land evaluation, landscape ecology and conservation agriculture.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Prof. Msanya has been principal investigator (PI) and /or research team member (RTM) of a number of NORAD (Norway), JICA (Japan) and VLIR (Belgium) and iAGRI (US) sponsored research projects as indicated below:

RTM, 2013 to 2015: Improving Agricultural Productivity and Crop Nutritive Quality in a Gender inclusive Approach in Tanzania. iAGRI USAID Feed the Future funded project.

PI, 2010 to 2014: SUA-VLIR Research Initiative Project (RIP) “Enhancing indigenous knowledge on conservation agriculture for poverty alleviation and sustainable livelihood in the Usambara Mountains, Lushoto, Tanzania.

RTM, 2008 to 2012: SUA-VLIR OWN-INITIATIVE PROJECT “Landscape-ecological clarification of bubonic plague distribution and outbreaks in the Western Usambara Mountains, Tanzania”.
