Sokoine AGRI-ENTERPRISE GROUP (SAEG) advanced in Innovation for Horticulture Value Addition

SUA STEPS company “Sokoine AGRI-ENTERPRISE (SAEG)” a group of twenty-one members from third-year students of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), pitched their innovative idea “MbogaFasta” in the Innovation horticulture value addition to the USAID feed the future, and emerged among the winners.

The SAEG is carrying out their horticultural production at the SUA Agricultural Incubation Centre (AIC). The USAID will grant them the cold Van Truck and capital to implement their innovations. This facility will enable SAEG to transport vegetables and other perishable horticultural products while maintaining freshness and prolonging products’ shelf life. Over a month ago, SAEG received capital to initiate their farm activities. Next month from 18th April 2024, USAID – Feed the Future is expected to visit SAEG at AIC to appreciate their progress in horticultural crop production.

The group is operating with the latest technologies affordable and best practices that they learn from the class and currently research information concerning the type of intended produce and resources available. The group also considers incorporating organic farming methods, efficient water use, and eco-friendly technologies in their production activities.

REDGOLD a certified company (ISO 22000:2005), agreed to sign a contract with SAEG to produce fresh hot peppers (Mwendokasi). REDGOLD is one of the leading manufacturers of chili and tomato paste products, which have spread to all regions of Tanzania and its borders. By signing this contract, SAEG will have the opportunity to supply quality horticultural products of fresh hot peppers in large amounts.


SUA offers a unique platform through SUA STEPS programs for students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. A group of students with shared agricultural interests, engage in various aspects of the agricultural sector, from crop cultivation, and livestock production to agro-processing activities. The Sokoine University of Agriculture established this incubation center to support entrepreneurial activities and innovation among the students. SUA Agricultural Incubation Centre (AIC) is intensively preparing the Sokoine University of Agriculture graduates for self-employment and employing others.
