It is a great pleasure and honor to announce, that on Friday, December 4th, 2020 our beloved YASINTA BEDA NZOGELA a member of staff at  the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis titled "Characterization of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes and Host Resistance in Rice Production in Tanzania " from Ghent University. It was a long journey of hard and funny moments, hundreds of books, and articles to read, hundreds of hours writing the thesis.

Agriculture General

Horticulture Year

ISeBAF is a collaborative project between the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA, Tervuren, Belgium) with the support of the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO). The project intends to recruit two (2) PhD students between January 2021 and December, 2024. The first PhD candidate shall test agroecological methods against fruit flies (Diptera, Tephritidae) attacking cucurbit crops in farmers’ fields in Morogoro, Tanzania, whereas the second candidate shall provide a comparative analysis of syrphid pollinators diversity (Diptera, Syrphidae) in agroecological and conventional cucurbit farming in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Applications from qualified and interested Tanzanians are hereby invited to fill the TWO PhD positions in the fields specified above. The scholarships will ONLY be considered for applicants who have secured admission or submitted application for admission into PhD programmes at SUA. The applicant should possess a master of science (MSc.) in Crop Science or a related agriculture based MSc. degrees with GPA of ≥3.5 from a reputable university. Experience in working on syrphids (pollinators) or tephritids (fruit flies) will be an added advantage. Females are highly encouraged to apply. AGROVEG is a collaborative project between the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA, Belgium, as leading Institution), Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique), and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) funded by the Belgian Development Cooperation (BDC). The project proposes the development of environmental-friendly methodologies, along agroecological principles, to mitigate the impact of fruit flies on vegetables such as cucurbits and Solanaceous crops.

Within this framework AGROVEG project intends to recruit one MSc candidate between November, 2020 to October, 2022) to conduct laboratory experiments at SUA on host related transcriptomics of Z. cucurbitae fed on allegedly conventional and unconventional hosts, as well as assessing the impact of agro-ecological practices versus conventional pest control approaches. The field experiments will be implemented using infrastructures and expertise available at the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture of SUA. The analysis of transcriptomic data will benefit of collaboration with researchers and PhD students of the Royal Museum for Central Africa.

TRAINING THEME: AGRIBUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS FOR GRADUATES

 

Graduate Training for Skills Development, Sustainable Employment and Jobs Creation in the Agricultural Sector in Tanzania is a project implemented by Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) funded by the Skills Development Fund. The program is monitored by the Tanzania Education Authority (TEA). The overall objective of the project is to develop skilled and competitive graduate workforce capable of effectively fostering Productive Jobs for inclusive and sustainable socio-economic growth through the transformation of Agriculture, Agri-Business, and Agro-Processing in Tanzania.

Eligibility: The courses will be delivered to graduates with an interest in horticulture as their carrier business. Applicants will be required to submit a one-page motivation letter and fill the application form (attached). The Project will cover the costs for breakfast and lunch during training. Sokoine University of Agriculture announces opportunities for Agro-studies internship in Israel for the year 2020/2021.

Agro-studies internship provides a unique internship training in agriculture, combining advanced studies and hands on ‘learning by doing‘, in various fields. By working in selected farms across Israel, the internees will be exposed to the most enabling and stimulating learning environment that nurtures them to learn and develop skills from the most advanced agricultural practices.

Internees will attend classes once a week at three campuses; Tel-Hai College in the North, Ruppin College and Kfar Silver. In addition, each group will be assigned a tutor to accompany them throughout their internship based on area of study and business plan upon return to Tanzania following completion of their internship. Internees will learn how to manage farm resources: labor, land and capital to ensure high productivity and efficiency of a farm. They will also learn how to manage markets through contract production and ensuring reliable quantity and quality supplies to their customers. Wizara ya Kilimo imekubaliana na Chuo Kikuu cha Kilimo Sokoine kuanza kuzalisha mbegu bora za mazao ya kilimo ili kujitosheleza na mahitaji ya wakulima nchini.

Makubaliano hayo yalibainishwa jana (24.04.2020) na Katibu Mkuu Wizara ya Kilimo Gerald Kusaya alipokutana kwa mazungumzo na Menejimenti ya Chuo hicho mjini Morogoro na kueleza kuwa nchi bado haijajitosheleza na mbegu bora.

“Tunahitaji ushirikiano wa kuzalisha mbegu bora za mazao ya kilimo kwa wingi ndani ya nchi ili kukidhi mahitaji ya wakulima ” alisisitiza Katibu Mkuu Wizara ya Kilimo inapenda chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine kianzishe vitalu vya uzalishaji mbegu bora za mazao ya mboga mboga na matunda ili kupunguza utegemezi toka nje ya nchi.

“Ifike hatua nchi yetu kuwa na uhakika wa mbegu bora na hai.Hii itaongeza ajira kwa vijana na wakulima kupata manufaa” alisema Katibu Mkuu Kusaya.

Kusaya alitaja maeneo mengine ya ushirikiano na Chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine kuwa ni kutumia maabara ya afya ya mbegu kupima ubora wa mazao kabla ya kusafirishwa ,kutambua visumbufu vya mazao na kupima ubora wa mbegu.Wataalam wa wizara ya kilimo wamekua wakipima mazao kwa macho matoke yake bidhaa za mazao zimekua zikirudishwa kwa kua ubora wake haukidhi viwango vya kimataifa.Matumizi ya  maabara bora ya kilimo ni muhimu ili kusaidia mapinduzi katika utafiti,uanzishwaji wa mashamba darasa kwa wahitimu wa masomo ya kilimo na kujenga maabara ya kisasa ya kupima ubora wa mazao yakiwemo mboga mboga na matunda kabla ya kusafirisha nje ya nchi ili kuongeza thamani ya bidhaa za kilimo.

Pia uhamasishaji matumizi ya teknolojia bora ya uzalishaji kwa kutumia zana za kisasa na utoaji huduma za ugani na mafunzo ya muda mfupi kwa wataalam wa wizara na wakulima kwa kutumia vyombo vya habari na TEHAMA ili kuwa na kilimo chenye tija na manufaa kwa mkulima. Katibu Mkuu Kusaya amekiomba chuo cha Sokoine kusaidia jitihada za wizara kudhibiti visumbufu vya mimea na mazao kama viwavijeshi,ndege waharibifu mfano kwelea kwelea,nzige wa jangwani,panya na magugu yanayoathiri mazao ya wakulima.

“Tunahitaji sifa nzuri ya ubora wa mafunzo na wataalam wa chuo kikuu cha Sokoine iendelee na kuwanufaisha wakulima kuongeza tija na uzalishaji kwa kudhibiti visumbufu vya mazao yake. “ alisema Kusaya.

Kwa mujibu wa takwimu za wizara ya kilimo kuwa uzalishaji wa ndani wa mbegu bora umefikia tani 61,703 mwaka 2019.

Kwa upande wake Makamu Mkuu wa Chuo Kikuu cha Kilimo Sokoine Prof,Raphael Chibunda alimshukuru Katibu Mkuu huyo kwa kutembelea chuo hicho na kuwa wapo tayari kuanzisha mafunzo maalum ya muda mfupi kwa ajili ya kufundisha wataalam waliopo kazini na wale wanaopenda kujifunza kilimo cha kisasa.

Prof.Chibunda alisema SUA itaendeleza ushirikiano na Wizara ya Kilimo kupitia taasisi za utafiti wa Kilimo (TARI) na kampuni ya mbegu nchini (ASA) na Taasisi ya Udhibiti wa Mbegu Tanzaia (TOSCI) kuzalisha mbegu bora za mazao kwa kutumia teknolojia na wataalam waliopo nchini.

“SUA ina msitu wa wataalam hivyo tunaahidi tutashirikiana na wizara ya kilimo kufanya tafiti za mbegu bora na pia kuzalisha mbegu hizo kwa matumizi ya ndani na nje ya nchi. ” alisitiza Prof.Chibunda.

Aliongeza kusema kina mkakati wa kuanzisha digrii maalum itakayosaidia kuzalisha wataalam wabobezi kwenye usimamizi wa sekta ya ushirika na kilimo nchini ili kuunga mkono jitahada za serikali kuwa na ushirika imara.

Katika hatua nyingine Prof.Chibunda aliomba Serikali iweke utaratibu wa kuratibu maduka ya pembejeo ili yawe na wataalam waliosomea kilimo na mifugo kwa ajili ya kutoa huduma za ushauri kwa wakulima.

Katibu Mkuu huyo wa wizara ya Kilimo alisema lengo la wizara yake ni kuhakikisha kunakuwepo sera nzuri na mazingira wezeshi ya kufanya kilimo kuwa ajira, uchumi na biashara kwa watanzania walio wengi.

Applications are hereby invited for admission into Higher Degrees at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) for the academic year 2020/2021. Candidates for Postgraduate Diploma, Master and PhD Degree programmes with course work are admitted and registered once every year for an academic year that starts in October of each year. Candidates for Master and PhD by Research and Thesis only may apply and be admitted at any time of the year. Successful candidates will be notified immediately after consideration and approval is made by the University Senate and they will be expected to embark on studies in October, 2020. Candidates meeting the prescribed minimum qualifications are invited to apply for admission.

Master degree by Research and Thesis is offered for two years (24 months) and 36 months on a full-time and part-time basis respectively leading to a thesis.

GENERAL MINIMUM ADMISSION QUALIFICATIONS

Master Degree by Coursework and Dissertation

  1. A candidate shall either hold an undergraduate degree with GPA of at least 2.7 of SUA or a qualification from an approved institution of higher learning with a GPA of 2.7.
     
  2. Candidates who hold unclassified degrees (e.g. BVM) should have an average of B grade in the subject of intended Master’s degree.
     
  3. Candidates with Pass degree will be considered for admission if their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a B grade average or above.
     
  4. Candidates with Pass degree will also be considered for admission if they have satisfied the relevant College/School Postgraduate Studies Committees that they have exhibited academic potential through extensive fieldwork/research experience of at least three years and/or additional professional development courses of duration of at least three months.
     
  5. With the exception of the MPVM and MBA (Agribusiness) degree programmes which are one year and one and half years, respectively, all other Master degree programmes are tenable for two years for full-time students and three years for part-time students. In the case of full-time students, the first year is dedicated for coursework, while the second year is for research and dissertation writing.

Master Degree by Research and Thesis

  1. A candidate shall either hold an undergraduate degree with GPA of at least 3.5 of SUA or a qualification from an approved institution of higher learning with a GPA of 3.5. OR
  2. Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 and research experience of at least three years. An applicant will be considered to have acquired research experience when he/she has published at least one paper in SUA recognized journals or one paper in conference proceedings or has attended training on grant proposal writing or research methodology or data analysis.

PhD programmes by Coursework and Dissertation

A candidate shall have Master degree from recognised higher learning institutions with GPA of at least 2.7.
PhD programmes by Research and Thesis
A candidate shall have:

  1. Master degree of SUA or other higher learning institutions with GPA of at least 3.5 OR average grade of B+ for unclassified master degrees;
    OR
  2. Master degree by Research and Thesis;
    OR
  3. Master of Philosophy in relevant discipline.
