Prof. Ephraim Japhet Mtengeti

Biography

Ephraim Joseph Mtengeti an Associate Professor has over the years accumulated experience on training and research on Pasture Establishment, Management and Utilization; Forage Conservation Technologies; Dry Season Feeding Strategies and Budgeting; Pasture Seed Production; Improvement of Degraded Grazing lands; Rangeland Survey and Vegetation Analysis; Environment and Climate Compatible Agriculture and Training smallholder livestock keepers on forage establishment, management and utilization.

Has been involved in curricula development for B.Sc. Range Management and M.Sc. Tropical Animal Production. He has also been involved in several research projects, including; forage establishment, conservation and utilization; rehabilitation of degraded rangelands, plant nutrition; forage seed production and management and invasive plants.

Important outputs of the projects include:-Improved feeding of dairy cattle under smallholder famers in particular Hai and Njombe Districts; Forage Conservation Technologies developed in particular i.e. in bag silage making and wooden hay box bailing technologies; Adapting dryland communities to climate change through integrating livelihood and natural resources in particular Mwanga District; Degraded Grazing land Rehabilitation technologies (i.e. pitting and water spreading technologies) up-scaled among agro-pastoral communities in particular Gairo, Handeni and Mwanga districts; Knowledge on the bahaviour and impact of some invasive plants enhanced in particular Chromoleana ordorata in Serengeti District and Eleusine jaegeri in Ngorongoro District.

Out of those research and supervision of post graduate students have published thirty seven journal papers, fifty eight proceedings papers, five book chapters, three extension manuals and six leaflets.  He is a member of Tanzania Rangeland Society and was founder and Chairman of the society from 2005 to 2016. Also a board member of National Ranching Company and served as technical advisor in the Morogoro region farmers-pastoral conflict resolution committee; in developing Grazing Land and Feed Act No. 13 of 2010 and Pasture Seed Regulations under the Grazing Land and Feed Act No. 13 of 2010 and on the grass species to establish on the Standard Gauge Railway line under construction from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro.
