{"id":59,"date":"2019-01-14T06:00:04","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T06:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/soil\/research-facilities\/"},"modified":"2022-02-19T16:41:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-19T16:41:18","slug":"research-facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.coa.sua.ac.tz\/soil\/research-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>1.&nbsp; <strong>UV-Vis Spectroscopy f<\/strong>or determination of Phosphorus, Boron, Sulphur&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-45\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/soil\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/UV.png\" alt=\"UV\" width=\"825\" height=\"575\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/soil\/mrs-pascalina-julius-mtanke-dip\/\">Mrs Paskalina Mtanke<\/a> Laboratory technician operating the UV Spectrophotometer for detemination of Phosphorus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UV-Vis Spectroscopy is a quantitative technique used to measure how much a chemical substance absorbs light.<\/strong>&nbsp;This is done by measuring the intensity of light that passes through a sample with respect to the intensity of light through a reference sample or blank.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Spectrophotometry is a quantitative measurement of the absorption\/transmission or reflection of a material as a function of wavelength. Despite being termed UV-Vis, the wavelength range that is typically used ranges from 200 nm up to 1,100 nm in the near-infrared.<\/p>\n<p>Using a spectrophotometer and carrying out absorption\/transmission measurements we can determine the amount (or concentration) of a known chemical substance simply, by studying the number of photons (light intensity) that reach the detector. The more a material absorbs light at a specific wavelength, the higher the concentration of the known substance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>2. Block Digester<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Simple block digester for total soil N measurement with aluminum block and a hot plate. Samples are digested for 2hrs in 16 mm diameter heat resistant glass tubes using H<sub>2<\/sub>SO<sub>4&nbsp;<\/sub>and a digestion mixture composed of CuSO<sub>4<\/sub>&nbsp;and K<sub>2<\/sub>SO<sub>4<\/sub>.
