Young innovators from the Department of Animal, Aquaculture and Range Sciences<\/a> (DAARS<\/strong>), from the College of Agriculture<\/a> welcomed the New Year 2026 of January 1st<\/sup> in a different style by presenting creative ideas, market-ready prototypes, and entrepreneurial solutions linked to the SUA Innovation Hub<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young innovators from the DAARS ushered in the New Year 2026 in a distinctive and inspiring way, by bestowing creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship rooted in science and societal needs. Rather than conventional celebrations, the DAARS Young Innovators Team marked the occasion by presenting new ideas and promoting prototypes developed at different stages of maturity, reflecting the department\u2019s growing culture of innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The event also served as a platform to introduce emerging innovators while highlighting the achievements of nine established innovation groups: SeaEssence Labs, Snack Squad, Aquavision Group, YU J Super Wash, PONICKS, Smart Aquaculture, Kjanki Incubator, Aquaprobio, and Microfeed. These groups are developing a wide range of impactful products and services, including health and personal care products such as soap bars, gels, shampoos, and moisturizers; organic fertilizers and livestock feeds derived from seaweeds; and value-added food products (healthy shacks) such as cured meat, fish sausages, dried and flavored fruits, and fruit pastes and jams aimed at mitigating post-harvest losses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Other notable innovations include quality animal feeds, probiotics and feed additives, chick incubators, automated fish transportation bags, precision fish feeders, and farmer-focused training solutions. Collectively, these innovations address key challenges in food security, environmental sustainability, and climate-smart agriculture, while creating tangible opportunities for youth employment and self-reliance after graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Significantly, the presented ideas and prototypes are being systematically nurtured and prepared for commercialization through strong linkage with the SUA Innovation Hub. This linkage provides access to mentorship, incubation space, business development support, and pathways to market, ensuring that student innovations move beyond concepts into viable enterprises.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The young innovators also expressed their appreciation to the Head of Department, Prof. Anthony Sangeda, for creating an enabling environment where talent can be identified, facilitated, and connected to the University Innovation Hub. Additional mentorship and guidance were provided by Mr. Ernest Magoti, leader of the DAARS Innovation Unit, Mr. Rashid Bakari, and Dr. Charles Lyimo, whose shared experiences and insights continue to inspire a new generation of innovators at Sokoine University of Agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n
