Tanzanian appointed to United Nations Advisory Committee<\/span><\/h1>\n

The United Nations has appointed Ghaamid Abdulbasat (@ghaamid.a) as a member of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) representing the youth of Africa and the world to implement the Nagoya Protocol of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity\/Environment. The objective is to strengthen the implementation of the agreement following the launch of the biodiversity policy framework in December 2022 in Canada at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15<\/a>), of which Tanzania is also a member.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Nagoya Protocol is an international agreement aimed at ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, including access to resources, technology transfer, and providing appropriate funding to contribute to biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As a member of the IAC, Ghaamid will contribute to the development of capacity-building programs focused on enhancing the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol. He will represent the youth in ensuring that their voices are heard and their perspectives are taken into account.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ghaamid is one of the Environmental Ambassadors of the Office of the Vice President, Director of the Tanzania Biodiversity Organization @tzbioorg, and has received various awards, including United Nations accolades, for his efforts in inspiring, engaging, and educating young people about environmental conservation since he began these initiatives in 2017.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mr Ghaamid Abdulbasat pursued his B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences and Management<\/a> from the Sokoine University of Agriculture<\/a> – Tanzania in 2019,\u00a0 and M.Sc. in Applied Ecohydrology from Erasmus Mundus Program (University of Algarve<\/a> – Portugal) in 2023.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
