Areas of expertise: Human Nutrition, Consumer Behaviour and Education

The Department of Food Technology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences (DFTNCS) is home to multidisciplinary fields in Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition Sciences, and Family and Consumer Studies. It is one of the six departments in the College of Agriculture, Sokoine University of Agriculture. It is involved in teaching, research, consultancy and outreach. The department gives students needed knowledge and practical skills to shape professional careers and expand studies outside of the classroom; and expand opportunities for public actions to improve individual, family and community well-being. Students utilise food processing and food analysis laboratories, a food pilot plant and textile room to conduct their practicals.

Our undergraduate programmes lead to BSc. Food Science and Technology, BSc. Human Nutrition and BSc. Family and Consumer Studies. Each programme runs for three years in six semesters. Students have the opportunity to complement their major disciplines with other relevant courses offered by other academic departments. These courses include business skills and entrepreneurship, economics, agribusiness, gender, development studies, communication, sociology, psychology, information technology and statistics. Our programmes help students to become part of the solution to food, nutrition and consumer issues, opening doors to a range of career opportunities. Students participate in field practical training to put learning into practice while studying. The university has partnerships with public and private sectors where students’ placements include working with governmental and non-governmental (local, international) organisations and institutions.
