Introduction

The Department was established in 1970 as Department of Animal Science and Production (DASP) under the then Faculty of Agriculture of University of Dar es Salaam and retained its name with establishment of Sokoine University of Agriculture in 1984. It was renamed Department of Animal, Aquaculture and Range Sciences (DAARS) following a University wide restructuring in 2015. From a handful of staff with no degree program and students of its own, it now boasts a team of 35 academic staff, 40 supporting staff, about 700 students and six degree programs. The Department is actively involved in teaching, research, outreach and production in fields of animal husbandry, aquaculture and range management.

The activities of the Department are guided by its vision (To be a leading unit in the provision of quality knowledge and skills in animal science, aquaculture, range management and allied sciences) and mission (Promote development in animal science, aquaculture, range management and allied sciences through training, research and delivery of services).
